More rain? Yes please!

I am not sure if I talked about this before, probably have but worth another mention I think... mushrooms!  How do they grow so fast?!  I am not a fan of mushrooms in general to eat, the texture is off to me but I do like the flavor such as cream of mushroom or on a steak but then I don't eat them.  Not on a pizza though because I don't notice the flavor.  But how do they grow so fast?  I go between my house and the neighbors all the time and every day I see new little mushrooms growing there.  I know they grow from roots of like trees and there is one there but the fact it grows through the dirt and grass every single day, a new one or two is fascinating.  I've seen super thick bulb ones in my background literally grow in just one night, how does it do that?!?  When I take it out of the ground and toss it over the fence, they are so rooted and THICK, just fascinating. I know the ones in my lawn are probably not good for consumption and nor would I want to eat them but the rate they grow and if they can make more things out of them, could solve a lot of food problems maybe.

Weekly Update:

This week continued to be cooler than the previous one and had some mornings where the ground was wet.  No rain or drizzles seen during the day but I'll take any moisture from the sky and waking up to it! No puddles though, just enough to see that the ground was wet and it stuck around a bit too because the weather was cloudy and cool so really nothing to dry it up quickly except time.  I hope seeing some moisture this early might mean we will have a good Winter (by good I mean a lot of rain!). This past Winter was extremely dry for us and our river beds and reservoirs are bone dry right now.  So, if we can get a wet Winter this year, that might last us for a year!  Plus ideally eliminate any dried up vegetation that may be flammable to avoid fires in the future.  Also, wet weather I feel like I use less electricity and water for the house which means lower utility costs which is always a bonus!

At the movies:

New at #1 is One Battle After Another with a very solid 22.4 million for an off-season time frame.  We'll start seeing some Academy contenders coming in the next few weeks as we approach award-season.  New at #2 is Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie with 13.7 mil and also a good number for this type of film during this time of year. Drop down to #3 is Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity with 7.1 mil and will quickly drop out at this rate.  Holding at #4 is The Conjuring: Last Rites with 6.9 mil as it continues along, looks like it may just fall short of 200 in the end.  New at #5 is The Strangers: Chapter 2 with 5.9 mil... there was a chapter 1?

New movies that did not make the top 5:

Only 1 this week in at #9 is They Call Him the OG with under 1,000 screens and earning 1.4 mil which is less than $2,000 per screen average so this will be out fast.

Getting cooler?  It sure has been and I hope it continues but when I look and think back, our Summer was relatively short in terms of hot weather.  It honestly didn't start getting hot here till maybe mid-August (with an occasional day here and there) and as we approach end of September, it's cooling back down!  And the nights are getting brisk or chilly again.  The nights were already cool but lacking any breeze so it felt warmer than it was with stagnate air.  Man, breezes sure make a HUGE difference in how it feels vs what it actually is.  It really is amazing but you don't want wind necessarily because that is just too much.  We also had some rain this past week so the layer of dust/dirt is gone but it wasn't enough to fill up any of our reservoirs or water reserves.  I am not sure what is predicted for this upcoming raining season but I just hope it gets cold because that does help our drought out!

Weekly Update:

I found the secret stash!  At work I found a stash of snacks but they belong to another department however, they said to take whatever I want!  So, I have been and they are pretty small snack size type things but still hit the spot in the afternoon when I'm trying to stay away in the office.  I'm also not one to just take, so lately I've been adding to the snack stash with additional snacks from Costco.  I have noticed though everyone tends to get sweet and I have been trying to go more savory.  I found mixed nuts but they did have M&M's but mostly nuts.  Also found some various roasted nuts and those are good.  And recently I found peanut butter cracker sandwiches but also ones filled with cheese but flavored by Cheetos and I think Doritos and they have both been pretty tasty.  Chips are hard because the small bags you get do take up a lot of space and you need something you can open and eat in one sitting so the family size bag of chips won't do.

At the movies:

Holding at the #1 spot for a 2nd week is Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity with another 17.3 million as it passes the 100 mil mark.  It did have a substantial drop though (76%) so this may have run its course already.  New at #2 is Him with 13.5 mil and below expectations.  Slight drop to #3 is The Conjuring: Last Rites with 13 mil and a low drop so that is good and should continue to do well. Holding at #4 is The Long Walk with 6.3 mil and will soon end its walk.  Rounding off the top 5 is Downtown Abbey: The Grand Finale with another 6.3 mil and may be the last we see of it.

New movies that did not make the top 5:
A few this week starting at #6 with A Big Bold Beautiful Journey earning 3.5 mil on a wide release pattern, not a very good per screen average.  In at #7 is The Senior with only 2.8 mil and also wide-release and low per screen.  At #9 is Sight & Sound Presents: Noah - Live! which is by Fathom Events and earned 1.4 mil but less than 1,000 screens and also not a full set of show times either.

Long time listener, first time caller...

Have you never noticed at certain times during the day when listening to the radio, they may play an extra long song?  The one I hear often is Paradise City by Guns-n-Roses which is a 4+ minute song.  That may not sound like a long time but the average song sits about 2 to 2 1/2 minutes.  So why do they usually play this song or another long one (Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen comes to mind)?  Usually it's a shift change from one DJ to the next or if you are working alone, you need a song long enough to to the bathroom!  When I used to do college radio back in the day, I would play this one song that was 9 mins (might have been longer) depending on what I needed to do.  I can't remember the song right now but it was from the 80's and kind of an alt rock song.  I want to say it was something from the Cocteau Twins but I think I'm mistaken.  But these songs usually give people enough time to get themselves set up before their shirt starts on the radio or, as mentioned, run to the restroom if you are working solo (which in college radio you are always solo).

Weekly Update:

The world is in turmoil... but what is interesting (and funny at the same time) is the current symbol for the fight for justice and equality... the pirate flag from One Piece.  I am not familiar with the show in general, I have only seen the live action on from Netflix and it was pretty good and looking forward to seeing season 2.  But in Nepal and Malaysia the pirate flag with the straw hat can be seen waving next to the countries flag as it's people are in all out revolution and succeeding.  How far will this movement and symbol go?  I hope it continues to fly and soar across the globe as it's not just a simple but an idea... the idea of freedom and equality.  The idea of being able to live and not be broke or homeless.  The idea of opportunity and its been working.

At the movies:

Taking the box office by storm is Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity earning a huge 70 million for a post season, non-holiday weekend.  This number is pretty significant for a number reasons as schools are back and this is generally that target audience.  Drop down to #2 is The Conjuring: Last Rites with 26.1 mil more and now over the 100 mil mark, potentially on the way to 200.  New at #3 is Downtown Abbey: The Grand Finale with 18.1 mil and will stay consistent but low.  New at #4 is The Long Walk with 11.5 mil and will have a short walk out.  Semi-new at #5 is the Toy Story 30th Anniversary release earning 3.5 mil of pure profit.

New movies that did not make the top 5:
Coming in at #9 is Spinal Tap II: The End Continues with 1.7 mil and less than $1000 per screen average.  This film should have came out 10-years (or more) ago.  In at #10 is The Sound of Music 60th Anniversary with 1.5 mil and had a better average with $1,232 and also one that is pure profit.

and I walked, I walked so far away...

If any 80's people out there... they might get the reference to this week's blog title... but I did a lot of walking lately with visitors from the outside (Florida).  I also did a lot of driving as well in such a short amount of time! And it all started mainly on Friday when I drove to LAX then from there to Burbank to Glendale to Hollywood back down to Anaheim.  Then I went back to LAX on Saturday to Anaheim and did a LOT of walking during the day at the park.  I was exhausted and I could have used some Advil.  I took some that morning but by the end of the day my lower back was getting sore so I should have put 2 more in reserve or something.  Sunday was more local driving and some walking but nothing as crazy as Saturday but all that walking is good, right?

Weekly Update:

Yum yum dim sum!  Did my new tradition of going to get dim sum in September in memory of my mom's birthday.  It was solo (again) but had a lot of leftovers to enjoy for later.  I had to get an order of shrimp har gow to eat there and another order to take home, that is definitely one of my favorites.  I was debating on the sticky rice but decided against it.  Got some other usual stuff like the egg custards and red bean balls, those are good for savory or dessert really.  Beef balls... not a traditional meatball but same concept of rolled ground beef.  Other favorites are the fried shrimp balls, those are actually pretty huge and they have that piece of bamboo in them so it's like a popsicle (the way you can eat it).  But, it was all delicious and I have more meals for the next day or two which will be nice.

At the movies:

New at #1 is The Conjuring: Last Rites with a hefty post-Summer 83 million to open.  Horror films seemed to do well at this time of year in general over October actually when we get closer to Halloween.  New at #2 is the live recording of Hamilton with 10 mil and also on less than 2,000 screens so not a bad number. Drop down to #3 is Weapons with 5.4 mil as it slowly winds down after an incredible run.  Holding on to #4 is Freakier Friday with 3.8 mil and does appear it will be short of that 100 mil mark. Hanging to #5 is Caught Stealing with 3.2 mil and likely be out by next week.

New move that did not make the top 5:
Just one this week at #9, Light of the World on over 2,000 screens and earning 2.4 mil which has an average of $1,157 so this one will be losing some shelf space fast.

The simple onion ring

Labor Day Edition

This edition of Monday takes place on another Labor Day.  Labor is always on a Monday, the first Monday in September so it matches and is consistent.  This year around here it was super HOT, in the mid 90's after we were enjoying an cool high 70's up till recently.  I hope this trend is very short and we dip back down into coolness but who knows.  What we really need is rain though because we are so dry here.  Our rainfall this past year was extremely bad and all our reservoirs are bone dry.  We need rain please!!  Global warming is so real and we are heading in the wrong direction as storms are getting more violent and temperatures continue to rise globally.  Yet... no one seems to care because it is the now and not the then.

Weekly Update:

I've probably talked about this before but it warrants a repeat... onion rings.  Yes, onion rings!  I love a good onion ring, dipped in ranch or maybe like an aioli dip but the breading is so important with the onion ring.  You have your low end rings from like Burger King and Jack in the Box which relay heavily on their breading.  You can feel and taste the oil just absorbed in it.  Then you have places like Farmer Boys where the breading is borderline heavy but not too heavy plus they seem to use a sweeter onion.  They are also very big so you typically only get 4 to an order but they equal more than the other chains.  In the semi-fast food chain is Wahoo's and they use a tempura-style batter and it's very light along with sweet Maui onions and these are one of the best around.  You also have restaurant chain onion rings but I haven't had many to compare.  I have had Red Robin which are fine, they range below Farmer Boys but above Jack in the Box.  I should try more onion rings and come up with a chart or something.

At the box office:
For a fourth week-in-a-row, Weapons holds #1 again for an extra 10.2 million as it chugs along into the 100's but at the drop rate it won't reach 200.  New at #2 is the re-release of Jaws 50th Anniversary with 8.1 mil and not bad for a 50-year old movie.  New at #3 is Caught Stealing with 7.8 mil and this is more caught and release it looks like.  Drop down to #4 is Freakier Friday with 6.5 mil as it continues to crawl to 100 mil but might reach it when all said and done.  Rounding off the top 5 and also new is The Roses with 6.4 mil and this one is nipped in the bud.
