What is this, Florida?!  The weather this past week has been so humid, it was like I am in Florida again.  I am not sure what is going on but we do not have this kind of weather.  Our heat is dry!  The air is so heavy and feels like I can scoop it with a spoon.  Most nights the heat breaks but humidity can last all day and night.  I am not sure when this desert turned into a tropical zone but stop it!  I don't even know if it is bringing any moisture except to my armpits and back!  Seriously though, can we make this stop??

Weekly Update:
Not a whole lot this past week ... it was quiet ... to quiet in fact.  I don't know, I am just so bored I guess.  I didn't go to San Diego Comic-Con this year but that is a good thing.  After last year's craziness, it was nice to take a week off plus I heard the lines, crowds and weather were all awful!  But aside from all of that ... I guess this is new news ... I've started writing for an online contribution site for what I write here about the weekly box office recap.  They reached out to my local comic book store and that store reached out to me because I guess I can write a little better than they can so now my recap is seen by hundreds of people (so far), the site has a potential 40 million viewers.  Along with that I have done two interview exclusives that including Doug Jones for "Falling Skies" and Guillermo del Toro for his new show "The Strain."  Next up, Stan Lee for just cool stuff in general.  Now, if I can just figure out a way to get paid for doing all of this, that would be nice.

At the movies:

No major surprises at the box office but despite San Diego Comic-Con going on, the box office was fairly healthy this past weekend.  Debuting at #1 is the action-thriller Lucy with a nice 44 million opening, pretty on par with estimations.  Also new at #2 is Hercules with a good 29 mil and also well on par with estimations, like I said, it was healthy week.  Dropping down to #3 is "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" earning an extra 16.4 mil as it slowly makes its way to 200 mil cum and should hit that in a few more weeks.  Big drop to #4 is "Purge: The Anarchy" with another 9.9 mil as it will soon lose all its steam.  Rounding off the top 5 is "Planes: Fire & Rescue" with another 9.3 mil as this animated film does a little crash and burn of its own.
New movies that did not make the top 5:
Just one this week as And So It Goes earns only 4.5 mil which is just a little short of expectations for this semi-wide release (about 1700 screens).  This one will probably fade away really fast ... and so it goes and so it went.

Cooooool ... yep, the weather cooled down nicely this week overall and even got pretty cold at night I had to get under the covers, close up some windows, it is nice.  I wish the Winter was like this but this is only one week of nice weather.  The days were breezy but cool, it was just cool.  Breezes are very important and I wish we could make some kind of huge breeze generator but then it would take a lot of electricity for something of that magnitude I would imagine.  Even if you used its own power (wind), probably wouldn't be enough.  Wonder if you took thousands of wind generators to power one breeze machine!!  But yeah, I am sure that would cost billions of dollars for something that probably wouldn't work ... but it's a funny dream.

Weekly Update:
The week was pretty standard for me except for Wednesday.  It was our 4th Annual Variety Poker Tournament at the Paramount Studio Lot.  The day started off warm during set-up but the breeze was good and so was the AC inside the theatre.  But as night came, it got pretty chilly but not too bad and the event started to get underway.  Most of my invited guests showed up but a few didn't, but that happens in this business.  I was very thankful for my friend Katrina who brought a bunch of extra talent from a show she did a couple years ago called "Spartacus" on the Starz movie channel.  But aside from that, got a few pics to add to the collection:

*James Kyson - best known for the show "Heroes" and a pretty nice guy.
*Ellen Hollman - from "Spartacus" and amazing!
*Anna Hutchison - also from "Spartacus" and very sweet.
*Nawal Bengholam - various small projects but very sweet.

At the movies:
The apes continue to dominate the box office as "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" earns another 36 million this weekend and has completely surpassed the 100 mil cume mark as expected (139 mil).  New at #2 is Purge: The Anarchy earning 28.4 mil which surpassed all expectations.  Flying in at #3 is Planes: Fire & Rescue with 18 mil which is slightly below expectations for this animated sequel but could sustain a decent number for a couple more weeks.  Also new at #4 is Sex Tape earning 15 mil which is very below predictions, could be the R-Rated comedies are all played out for the Summer.  Rounding off the top 5 is "Transformers: Age of Extinction" with another 10 mil as it hits 227 mil cume and should end off around 250+ when it is all said and done.

Ah the weather ... and how much you suck.  Well I guess the nice weather couldn't have lasted as a heat wave hit and hit hard.  I mean the nights were good but the days hit the high 80's to low 90's and sometimes felt even warmer without the breezes.  They say it will get cooler but we shall see.  All you want to do is find some cool spot to do nothing and that is what I hope to do ... 1) find that cool spot and 2) hope to do nothing.  Not too much to ask for, is it?  I would sit in front an open fridge if I knew it wouldn't waste so much electricity but it sure does!  Homer Simpson did that once and it looked like fun ... sitting in front of a fridge with a sheet to make it like a tent and eating food as you need it because it was all right there.  But in the end the motor burned out and I suspect that isn't too far from the truth not to mention the electricity bill that may have rung up or could have it one did that but I won't find out!

Weekly Update:

So what went on this week ... hmmm, nothing again?  I am that boring and doing nothing? I need to find something and soon or I will go a bit stir crazy ... unless I have already and did not realize it.  That is a very distinct possibility!!!  I want to be free (with snow!) like this little dog in the picture.  He doesn't have a care in the world and rightly so.  I wish life can be like this, snow running and not caring but alas, that is not how it is.  But I think that is part of the dream, no?  Problem with that is money ... need to work to keep working and then you have to work some more, it just never ends.   Depressing, I know.

At the movies:

World domination has started for the apes!  As expected, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes takes the box office crown this weekend with a staggering 73 million for it's debut.  Over 10 million the predicted estimations but I did mention it would break 60 mil easily.  Big drop to #2 is "Transformers: Age of Extinction" earning an additional 16.5 mil as it passes the 200 mil mark.  Holding ground at #3 is "Tammy" with another 12.9 mil as it tries to reach 100 mil cume but will likely fall short.  Holding at #4 is "22 Jump Street" earning 6.7 mil more as it tries to make its way to 200 mil cume but will also likely fall short.  Rounding off the top 5 is "How to Train Your Dragon 2" with 5.9 mil extra and has reached 152 mil cume which isn't as hopeful of a number as most expected.

That's a producer." - Oscar Hammerstein II

4th of July Edition

This past Friday was 4th of July and talk about having a major long holiday weekend.  Some businesses closed down early Wednesday while the rest Thursday by noon.  Traffic was extremely heavy both days and then Friday itself ... ghost town.  But what did I do??  Nothing, I sat at home working on some random things while the poor puppy (well, puppy to me) scrunched under my desk, next to my legs to make sure he was touching me while all the fireworks were going off all over the place.  It is kind of hard when you live near Angel Baseball Stadium, Disneyland and various stadiums for college events all being used for firework shows.  Shadow seemed unaffected and only bothered me when she wanted attention but poor Orion, he was so scared and just had to be tucked in a very tight space for security.  But he made it through and is back to his cheerful self.

Weekly Update:
So what happened this week ... hmmm ... aside from 4th of July and I was hanging out at a BBQ/Car Wash event on Saturday, what else did I do?!  I felt like I did something but what ... I guess it was nothing worth remembering.  I had a meeting or two again but that was all via phone and I guess that was really it.  I know I slept a lot on Wednesday, my body just simply shut down and I was exhausted.  I probably took several naps but one nap was really good till my phone went off with an Amber Alert in ... FLORIDA!!  I appreciate that the system is in place but I think it should only pertain to the state it is in or maybe even within one state radius.  Florida just happens to be on the other side of the country to me so I don't think I should have received this particular alert.  Well, after that I just got up and went about my day but still, it was going to be a good nap till that happened!

At the movies:
Despite a substantial drop in its box office for a holiday weekend, "Transformers: Age of Extinction" defended it's crown for the #1 spot!  Earning another 36.4 million, it closes in on the 200 mil mark and at this rate should get it within the next week and weekend.  New at #2 is the comedy Tammy with a solid 32.9 mil for the 5-day (Wednesday opening) which is pretty much what was predicted.  New at #3 is Deliver Us From Evil with 15 mil to open which is also about on point and likely to fizzle out from here.  Hanging on to #4 is "22 Jump Street" with an extra 9.4 mil as it continues to climb to 200 mil domestic but will likely fall just short of it in the end.  Rounding off the top 5 is "How to Train Your Dragon 2" with another 8.8 mil as it will fall very short of hitting the 200 mil mark unfortunately.
New films that did not make the top 5:
Just one this week as the family sci-fi Earth to Echo came in at #6 with only 13.5 mil for the 5-day and fell in the lower end of the box office predictions.  This is at #6 because the 13.5 mil is a total gross with a Wednesday opening and the older films (#4 and #5) were only calculated for Fri through Sun which both exceed Echo's Fri to Sun total (8.25 mil).
