Memorial Day Edition

It's the national BBQ day!  Well, not really but that is what this day has become more-or-less but with a side of remembering those who have served and passed in our armed forces throughout the centuries.  As far back as the war for independence (1776) to as recent as those stationed abroad in Afghanistan and Iraq still.  Even those who are in the country and something has happened while serving to just in a neighboring country watching out for our interests.  I hope those still living and serving are able to enjoy a BBQ at least while we take some pause on those who served before them.

Weekly Update:
It sure has been an odd week in both weather and time ... weather was just weird with a lot of clouds, some rain and cold breezes ... or what I call perfect weather!  But the weather isn't the odd thing this week believe it or not ... time is!  I've lost the concept of time and I think the quick naps are throwing my whole time table off ... I think. But the other morning I woke up 5 minutes before my alarm and I thought it was a day later.  That has never happened to me before but what I have done is fallen asleep after work and then waken up to just go to bed.  This has been happening more often than not and its hurting my eyes too.  I get blurry vision at a distance a lot but Sunday morning it was ALMOST normal but then again I got to sleep in!  So, I think I just need some sleep to readjust my off time warp and maybe help my sight a bit?

At the movies:
Surprise at #1 but not because it's at the top but the gross it brought in!  New at #1 is Solo: A Star Wars Story with a 3-day total of only 83.3 million.  Estimated holiday projections put it just over 100 mil but that could change as weather across most of the country is really good for outdoor holiday activities which do not include going to the movies.  Suffering from mediocre reviews, this film will struggle to pass 200 mil cume.  It should do well globally and in the after markets but really needed that domestic number.  Drop down to #2 is "Deadpool 2" with another 42.7 mil and now just past 200 mil.  Drops indicate it may not reach 300 mil but seems solid for this film and for Fox.  Holding ground at #3 in its 5th week is "Avengers: Infinity War" with an extra 16.5 mil as it makes its way to 650 mil cume!  Slight drop to #4 is "Book Club" with 9.5 mil and should cap off around 50 mil.  Rounding off the top 5 is "Life of the Party" with 5.1 mil and the party should be over after this weekend.

More cool weather!  Now this is the winter we should have or even spring!  This whole week has been really nice, light jacket weather.  The days have ranged in the low 70's, maybe high 60's but the nights are in the 50's.  So to me, it has been really nice. I wish we had some rain as we are bone dry but the over cast has been good.  Its really good walking around weather too as I did on Wednesday night at Disneyland.  Went to the park and met up with some co-workers from Tampa, Fl.  Had a really nice dinner at Disney's California Adventure at Wine Country Trattoria.  I will say the portion sizes were a bit too small but the food was really good.  I just don't think they qualify to serve basic Italian foods (spaghetti, lasagna, salad) at prices of like kobe beef.  Or the portion sizes should be at minimum 4 times what they give you.  Good food but not affordable food.

Weekly Update:
This past Saturday I attended an interesting food tasting for an upcoming restaurant in Little Tokyo.  The food was amazing and tried stuff I have never tried before.  Not a fan of raw fish but tried the crudo and it was OK.  I think the texture is what throws me.  But aside from that, everything else was just amazing and can not wait to try other things there.  This was a very unique and specialized menu for this event. I am not a drinker but if I was, I probably would have gone crazy with all the sake options they had ... so many bottles and that is not even what will eventually be on tap! We also invited a few people and they also brought some people and got some pics with them.

*Tomohisa Yamashita - big name in Japan TV and cinema, awesome guy!
*Adam Tsekhman - currently on "Legends of Tomorrow" and great guy!

At the movies:
A new king is at the top but nothing surprising either.  Taking the #1 spot is Deadpool 2 with a nice 125 million and right on industry expectations.  Solid word-of-mouth and should easily glide to a 300+ domestic cume.  Slight drop down to #2 in its 4th week is "Avengers: Infinity War" earning another 28.7 mil as it is just shy of 600 mil.  Should be able to get that by end of this week.  This gives Marvel the 1 and 2 spots as expected.  New at #3 is Book Club with 12.5 mil and very close to expectations, actually higher than projected but not by much.  Dropping down to #4 is "Life of the Party" with 7.7 mil and I think this party is just about over.  Rounding off the top 5 is "Breaking In" with 6.5 mil and it couldn't even break out.

New movies that did not make the top 5:
Just one this morning as Show Dogs comes in at #6 with only 6 mil to open.  Right on target for expectations and what we kind of expect from this side studio.

COLD!!

Our weather sure took a change and this past week sure felt like our typical Winter ... in May.  It averaged about low 70's which is kind of normal but a lot of overcast from the marine layers.  The nights were very good being in the 50's and 60's.  I'm glad I got the new blanket because it sure came in handy!  I was bundled up just like this cat ... though it has more blankets than my one and seems to be more covered than I was but not by much.  Now, if we could just get a little rain with this weather than it will really feel like Winter here!  Even though we are heading into Summer.

Weekly Update:
This week was kind of busy!  Full of meetings and more meetings, even meetings that weren't planned.  Nice thing is almost all of them were ones I just had to call into instead of being there in person.  A few were in person, cramped spaces in fact which is unusual.  There is such a thing as too much and having all of these meetings in a week is too much because then you get behind on your regular work.  Its the same when you have to travel for work but that is even worse because it takes days out for traveling and then that means your regular office works get even further behind!  Yep, too many of these kinds of things is a bad thing.

At the movies:
Continuing at the top for a 3rd week in a row is "Avengers: Infinity War" with another 61.8 million for the weekend.  Now close to 550 mil domestic cume, still on track to be close to 700 mil.  New at #2 is Life of the Party wit 18.5 mil, almost spot on expectations. These films are almost cookie-cutter now for McCarthy.  New at #3 is Breaking In with 16.5 and also on target.  Drop down to #4 is "Overboard" with 10.1 mil and will stay afloat a bit longer.  Rounding off the top 5, "A Quiet Place" continues doing well with an extra 6.4 mil but will finish just shy of 200 mil domestic when it's all done.

Getting hot in here!

Well, our weather took a sharp change for the worst! We had started off great with some 60 degree weather and maybe a little rain, that was nice but short-lived.  BUT, the week ended up being hot again, up in the 90's and the rest of this coming week plans on being warm.  The short-lived Spring has ended as we start our Southern California Summer season already.  The nights look like they will stay cool, so trying to sleep with the windows open and then close them up in the morning.  Problem is I work upstairs at home and it heats up faster ... the dogs are smart and they go lay out downstairs about mid-day!  Wish I can join them!

Weekly Update:
Two sort of unofficial holidays occurred this past weekend.  The first one is May 4th named after the Star Wars saying "May the Force Be With You."  People like to celebrate with today's pop culture and you can see a lot of online deals for Star Wars related merchandise ... and there is a LOT of merchandise.  Not just toys anymore either.  But it is a fun play on words and kind of celebrated around the world now with the huge success and return of the Star Wars franchise of films.  Then on Saturday it was Cinco de Mayo, or the 5th of May.  The day itself has no significance but its celebrated in the US with a lot of parties and alcohol.  I think many mistake it as Mexico's version of 4th of July but it has no association to any independence from the US or anything else.  So, its what we call a "Hallmark Holiday" in which it was created for simply sales ... like Valentine's Day.

At the movies:
No surprise at the box office as "Avengers: Infinity War" holds on to #1 for its 2nd week with an average drop making 112.5 million.  Now past 450 mil domestic, It has easily surpassed 1 Billion world-wide.  New at a distant #2 is Overboard with 14.8 mil and right where we expected it to be.  Holding on to #3 is "A Quiet Place" with 7.6 mil and still doing pretty well.  Also holding on to #4 is "I Feel Pretty" with another 4.9 mil and will tap out soon. Rounding off the top 5 is "Rampage" with 4.6 mil and will definitely fall short of the 100 mil mark.

New movies that did not make the top 5:
A couple this week but not surprising.  First is Tully at #6 with 3.2 mil and about expected numbers.  New at #10 is Bad Samaritan with only 1.8 mil and also no surprise there.
