OSCAR EDITION

Sunday saw the 89th Academy Awards ceremony and well ... it was interesting!  Overall the show as pretty good compared to recent years.  Some good jokes but could use some more.  I do like the fake feud between Jimmy Kimmel and Matt Damon and I am glad they continued that on the show, it was entertaining to me at least.  The biggest surprise of the whole evening was the last award and I think people over a certain age maybe shouldn't read the winners any more maybe??  That will be a moment remembered for a very long time in Oscar history for sure ... or just in televised history to be honest.  But good on the both the "La La Land" folks and Kimmel when it happened.  I think they took a good approach and were also very humbling when it was clearly neither of their faults.  Also begs the question why do they have two envelopes for each category and they gave the same one twice.  I understand back ups but don't have them together maybe?  But congrats to "Moonlight" on the win ... didn't see though so I need to catch up still.

Weekly Update:
This past Wednesday we had our 11th Annual Young Variety Pool Tournament and it appeared to be a great turn out and event.  The pool hall was packed but it is also just a tad smaller than previous locations.  But it was still great and had a handful of celebrity friends attend again.  Also met some new friends and added them to the collection:

*Erin Cahill - known as the pink power ranger in Time Force and so awesome!
*Aimee Garcia - from various TV show appearance and nice.
*Jessika Van - up and coming actress and very sweet!

At the movies:
Its Oscar Night!!!  Who will win some gold (La La Land) and who will go home empty handed?  Tonight should effect the next couple of weeks but not this weekend!  New at #1 is Get Out with 30.5 million to open.  Above all expectations and some decent reviews coming out of this thriller.  Slight drop to #2 is "The Lego Batman Movie" with another 19 mil and making its way to 150 mil.  At #3 is "John Wick: Chapter 2" with an extra 9 mil as it looks like it may fall short of 100 mil cume.  Holding at #4 is "The Great Wall" with another 8.7 mil and this epic is losing steam fast.  Rounding off the top 5 is "Fifty Shades Darker" with 7.8 mil and about to turn the light off on this one.

New movies that did not make the top 5:
Have a couple this week ... up first is Rock Dog as it comes in at #11 with only 3.7 mil to open.  Fell below expectations but also not very surprising.  Coming at #13 is Collide with only 1.5 mil and again below expectations and again, not surprising.

RAIN ... again.  So they promised us 2 or 3 days of heavy rain and it did rain, just not heavy and not for 2 or 3 days.  More like less than a day total and it was just light to medium.  So, where did it go?  Mountains continue to be covered but I have no idea if they received more or not because at this distance it looks the same.  Did it go inland?  Which is good too because they need rain having more crops.  But ... where did it go?  Heard reports of mass down pours in Los Angeles but then it never showed up here.  Some very light showers ... I wanted mass rain!!!  So sad, was set up to hunker down inside and enjoy doing nothing but instead ... some rain, mostly sunning skies and cool temperatures.  I know I know, that sounds like great weather but not for me.

Weekly Update:

Had a couple of events this past week and both on the same day.  Nothing but still a little fun and a nice break.  The first event was just an outing to Disneyland on Thursday morning and it was cool.  Got to check out the new Soarin' ride and eventually did a little Midway Mania.  Then ended up staying there for lunch and went to Disneyland for that at the Mexican place.  It was a lot of food, more than expected.  Later on that night, went back to California Adventure to help with the Minnie's Moonlight Madness event.  This was fun to watch as teams of four (tied together) go around the park and tries to figure out clues.  So I helped with the first clue set called Scatter Clues.  You have about 400 teams times 4 people per team so when they start the "race" they go to different clues in the park to start before they go the main clue center to get the next clue.  This way not all 400 teams are going to the same clue center and kind of breaks it up.  Pretty good idea and it was fun but ran late.  I think I got home around 1AM.

At the movies:
No surprises this weekend as "The Lego Batman Movie" continues at #1 with an extra 34.2 million and just shy of 100 mil for its first 10-days.  Should get to that mark sometime tomorrow though.  Holding at #2 is "Fifty Shades Darker" with 24.2 mil more and also close to 100 mil cume, should get that by end of day tomorrow if not sooner.  New at #3 is The Great Wall with 18.1 mil and slightly below expectations.  They did a lot of promotions for this film but appears it didn't really pay off.  Holding at #4 is "John Wick: Chapter 2" with 16.5 mil and this film does have pretty good reviews and reactions.  New at #5 is Fist Fight with 12 mil to open and right around exceptions.

New movies that did not make the top 5:
Just one this week as A Cure for Wellness comes in at #10 with only 4.2 mil.  Pretty much as expected and no cure to save this film into going further.

It has been a little warmer lately but not too bad.  Not Summer weather but warm Winter weather.  Did not need the heater on at night which is good but could use more rain.  We did get a little bit but honestly still not enough.  Some areas were flooded but these are areas that just simply were not prepared for what they had was so old and wasn't repaired for it.  We use to get heavy rains every Winter when I was growing up and it didn't flood this bad like it has been.  But nothing has changed except more junk fell into those areas and possibly causing clogs and jams so the water is not flowing at all as it should be.  We should look at a major clean up if this happens again next year and so if it does get heavy, it will not flood or as much.  Just a thought!

Weekly Update:
Another week of just work work work ... had a dinner recently with someone I think will explode on the movie scene pretty soon.  She was a stunt woman before but slowly making her way to on screen acting and I hope for big things to come.  She is having me and friend come along with her on this journey as her publicist so should be exciting things!  Her two movies coming up this year are "Wonder Woman" and "The Justice League."  Two big movies for sure, her part is minor but what is cool is she is the same character in both movies.  So that is something and maybe it will get her more recognition soon!  But overall, it is just exciting to be along for the ride!

At the movies:
As expected, the new The Lego Batman Movie comes in at #1 with a decent 55.6 million to start off with. Slightly below expectations but still a solid opening with very strong word-of-mouth to carry it to at least a 200 mil cume down the road. New at #2, coming in just slightly below expectations is Fifty Shades Darker with 46.8 mil to open. No real positive or negative responses but several ladies' nights out attended this film.  Also new at #3 is John Wick: Chapter 2 with 30 mil to open and above expectations.  Would not be surprised for a #3 in this franchise with that number coming in.  Dropping down to #4 is "Split" with 9.3 mil but breaking the 100 mil cume mark.  Rounding off the top 5 is "Hidden Figures" as it continues its award buzz and earning another 8 mil.

MORE RAIN!!!  It has been great the past few days with just consistent weather being colder and rain.  I do not mind either one of these things, just nice seeing Winter weather happening again as it should be.  Plus our riverbeds are filling up, mountains will have snow for a long time which will then later trickle down as water and continue with a supply for awhile.  I would say as of right now, this would sustain us for months but we need this each year to fully take us out of drought red-zone.  Its a nice temporary fix but that is all it is right now.  I hope people don't forget what is was like prior to all this great rain weather we are having right now!  We can quickly go back to the cracked dirt reservoirs we had just a couple months ago in a matter of weeks if temperatures rise, no moisture or water ... in no time.

Weekly Update:

I am tired ... I think I will be tired for awhile to come.  No vacations planned or special trips but maybe I am due?  But then after you get take a vacation you dread going to work and feel tired just being on vacation.  I know it doesn't make sense but it always happens.  But also planning a trip!  Where to go, what to do and all of this costs something.  Then you have to work again for another trip, its a pretty vicious cycle once you think about it.  So many factors and things to think about.  I guess that is why many do end up using travel agents.  I suppose they still do serve a purpose in this day and age.

At the movies:
Holding at #1 is "Split" earning another 14.6 million and just shy of 100 mil.  It should get that by end of day tomorrow which is solid numbers for M.Night in a very long time.  New at #2 is Rings with 13 mil and right at expectations.  Holding on to #3 is "A Dog's Purpose" with another 10.8 mil as it struggles along trying to recover from the bad press which turned out to be only part of the story but it may be too late.  Doing well at #4 is "Hidden Figures" with another 10.1 mil as it soars past 100 mil barrier and continues to receive award accolades this season.  Rounding off the top 5 is "La La Land" with another 7.5 mil as it also continues its award accolades.

New movies that did not make the top 5:
Just one this week coming in at #9, The Space Between Us earning only 3.8 mil and slightly below expectations.
