California approved a minimum wage increase by $1.25 (20%) over the next 18 months. So instead of $6.75 it will be $8.00, .75 first phase and then .50 in 2008. I hope folks realize that almost all business, the only real managable expense is payroll/human resources. So when this goes up, everything else goes up from goods to fuel to ... well, everything. I remember when I used to work at the theatre and min. wage goes up, then a couple weeks later concession prices would rise and following close behind ticket prices. Do not be surprise when you go to the movies (or even renting them) and it goes from $11 per ticket to $11.50 and a big bag of corn goes from $3.75 to $4.00 per ... its all due to the min wage increase. So in the end, do we really make more? I always felt like I made less because of course more is taken out for taxes and costs of everything goes up that much which is then taxed again.

Weekly Recap:
This was a very busy and crazy work week for me and all not good at all. Complicated projects made even more complicated and the loop of information with gaping holes. I have no clue what is going on. But mid-week my back decided to take a break and I was laid up for a day and the weekend. The same thing happen to me about 4 years ago and took about a week to fully recover. So, same thing again and back to the chiropractor (who is a really good one too).

Saturday some guys came and finally removed the infested furniture ... next step, I don't know yet but at least that was taken care of finally.

At the movies:
The weekend box office win goes to Gridiron Gang as it scores a touchdown with 15 million opening weekend. Coming in second is the crime drama The Black Dahlia with 10.4 mil. The animated adventure from the late Christopher and Dana Reeves, Everyone's Hero comes in #3 with only 6.2 mil. The new romantic drama The Last Kiss takes #4 with a pocket 4.7 mil. Rounding off the top 5 is "The Covenant" with 4.7 mil, just shy of #4's spot.

Q & A:
None at this time.

Other News:
The space shuttle Atlantis went into space on Saturday the 9th, that is the 2nd trip without any real hitches for the shuttle program. There is a lot of debate about the cost for this program and if its really worth it. Lets face it, the Earth is not a big place anymore and as we continue to dry-out a lot of natural resources, we have to continue the exploration or no progress can be made. Not saying that we will find everything we need in space or anytime soon but the steps we take will help that much more. Also, the shuttle progam in the grand scheme of things is actually relatively inexpensive. I think it was estimated if each person in the United States gave $2 per year, it would fund NASA and everything involved with it for that year. These numbers were at least 10 years ago but I have to imagine it being the same for two reasons, 1) costs go up and 2) population goes up. So both factors would off-balance each other. But we have to continue supporting the space shuttle program, aim high and reach for the stars as they say ... the new frontier is up.

Facts & Tips:

I agree, McDuck. Minimum wage increases only spur inflation. I know the argument for the increase is usually to help poor people, but I say that those people who are still working min. wage when they are old are in sad shape all around. I worked min. wage as a high school/college student--not trying to support myself or a family.

I am in complete support of the space program. To me, space exploration is an expression of parts both scientific and artistic being fused together into a creation larger than mere mortality. Visionaries and pragmatics working together to bring dreams into reality--what can be greater?

I mourn the lack of foresight in those who want to dismantle the space program. Maybe they just need to watch more Star Trek...
