HOT!! Holy cow ... so last week on Thursday it was 5:30PM and it was 102 degrees ... 102!!!! Granted I was in the "valley" where it does get hotter but 5:30 in the afternoon?? I couldn't believe it when I was walking out to my car and as soon as the elevator door opened, WHAM! HEAT!!! Also last week we saw the first day of Fall and we were beyond Summer heat ... talk about crazy! No, seriously, talk about crazy ... go ahead.

Weekly Update:
Monday night I was invited by a very good friend to a special industry screening of
Flash of Genius which is based on the true story of Dr. Robert Kearns and how he invented the Intermittent Windshield Wiper which Ford Motors stole. The movie was good but does have a limited appeal. What was cool is that some of the cast attended the screening and I was lucky enough to get a quick shot with:

*
Greg Kinnear- Very nice guy and I thought he was great in Little Miss Sunshine.

On Thursday I went to a TV taping for
According to Jim which I must admit, I have never seen before. It was a really great time and it was pretty funny. The cast was great although the entire cast was not in this particular episode so some were not there that night. But I did get to meet most of them plus the guest:

*
James Belushi- Very cool guy and funny thing is I meet him briefly on Monday at the screening.
*
Taylor Atelian- Plays the young daughter and very nice.
*
Conner Rayburn- Nice kid who plays the son and he did an amazing job that night.
*
Larry Joe Campbell- Plays the best friend and co-worker to Jim and is a very funny guy.
*
Jackie Debatin- Guest star of the episode who played the piano teacher and an incredibly sweet lady.

At the movies:
Action back at #1 as
Eagle Eye earns a nice 29.2 million. A little romance at a distant #2 with Nights in Rodanthe at 13.6 mil. Dropping down to #3 is "Lakeview Terrace" with another 7 mil. New at #4 is Fireproof with 6.5 mil and that is kind of an impressive number considering the film opened to less than 900 screens. Rounding off the top 5 is "Burn After Reading" with an extra 6.2 mil.

New movies that did not make the top 5: Looks like we have three this week which isn't too surprising. In at #9 is the World War II drama
Miracle at St. Anna with 3.5 mil however it only opened to about 1200 screens. Popping in at #14 is the dark comedy Choke with 1.3 mil but this one comes in with just under 500 screens. In at #25 is The Lucky Ones with only 208k but also under 500 screens.

Comment Response:
Being in this industry I just get to go and have to attend certain events. Some of these you will find a celeb or two, just depends. I go to functions all the time with no celebs, just a fun time for good causes. It is very random and varies a lot. As to your speaker question, it depends on your budget. I have Bose myself and have had them for YEARS!! However, they are not really designed for in-wall. Now, what I do not know is if the wiring in the wall is just for connecting or if your home is set up for speakers to be put into the walls. Either way, a good site to check out some speakers of various kinds is
ProAcoustics, they carry a very wide range of pro to in-wall speakers. If you want something more simpler, effective and not too crazy in price then I would recommend Bose and what is also nice is they have stores in select malls that you can go and check out their stuff (as well as the big electronic stores).

Legendary actor
Paul Newman passed away on Friday after a long battle with cancer. Newman was probably best known recently as the voice of "Doc Hudson" in the animated Pixar feature "Cars." His other notable film credits include such great classics as "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," "The Sting," "The Color of Money," "Cool Hand Luke," "The Hustler," and his Academy performance in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof." Newman was also known for all his charity work that he did giving every single cent of profit with the sale of his various "Newman's Own" brand of goods which originally started as a joke. To this day, the organization as donated over $175 million to charities. Newman was also known to shun the "Hollywood" lifestyle and mostly kept to himself, private and most importantly grounded. He was known for keeping a good sense of humor as he told Newsweek in 1994, "I think that my sense of humor is the only thing that keeps me sane." To sum up this man's life would never end and his memory never will. Newman was 83.

So this blog system now has fixed the photo issue when using Mozilla ... again I wonder what new thing will go down. Sometimes if feels like the Millennium Falcon of systems where it works enough to function but not to top performance. AND then you have to whack it on the side to get it going at times. "What a piece of junk" as Luke Skywalker said when he first laid eyes on it ... and so it is ... so it is. But the current new problem is upon us as the "save" function wasn't even working for most of Friday and kind of off-and-on during the week. Why does this thing have so many issues!!! Google sucks.

Weekly Update:
So on Friday at work they held an outdoor event to kick off the new season of upcoming ABC shows. They had various booths with some games and activities for shows like "Grey's Anatomy" and "Ugly Betty." It was a pretty nice event despite the heat and I got to take some pics with a couple of "General Hospital" cast members:

*Nancy Grahn- Incredibly friendly person!
*Brandon Barash- Very cool dude!

Then later that night, I attended a special fundraiser which helps girls and young women in Africa with education called The Batonga Foundation and hopefully gets them out of harms way in those depressed countries. They have kind of a cool logo that is a butterfly (not sure what it represents in this particular organization) and in the wings you see the continent of Africa. During the event I got to meet some nice folks:

*Megalyn Echikunwoke- She was just casted for the new season of "CSI: Miami" and I sat next to her for dinner. A very charming and beautiful girl.
*Ziggy Marley- Nice guy, BIG hat.
*Angelique Kidjo- One of the host of the evening and spokesperson for the foundation. Also recent Grammy winner and an amazing singer!
*Holly Robinson-Peete- Best known for her role in "21 Jump Street" and an incredibly nice woman.

At the movies:
Kind of a dull time at the box office as the post-summer movies continue to be flushed out. In at #1 is the suspense film Lakeview Terrace with 15.6 million. Holding ground at #2 is "Burn After Reading" with an extra 11.3 mil. New at #3 is the comedy My Best Friend's Girl with only 8.3 mil. New at #4 is the animated feature Igor with only 8 mil. Rounding off the top 5 is "Righteous Kill" with 7.7 mil.

New movies that did not make the top 5: One this week as the comedy Ghost Town chimes in at the #8 spot with 5.2 mil this weekend.

Sunday held the 60th Anniversary Primetime Emmy Awards at the new Nokia Theatre in Downtown LA. The usual star-studded night but the show wasn't overly political as some past Emmy's have been. The political humor was subtle at times yet funny while some were pretty bad. But a couple of my favorite shows won top honors including; "The Amazing Race" for Outstanding Reality-competition Program (this was their 6th Emmy win in a row), "30 Rock" for Outstanding Comedy Series, Alec Baldwin in "30 Rock" for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, Tina Fey in "30 Rock" for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, and "30 Rock" episode "Cooter" for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. Congratulations to all nominees and winners ... till next year!

Remembering 9/11

Last Thursday was the 7th anniversary of the horrific attacks against the US when several commercial planes were hijacked and used as weapons. I remember that tragic morning as I woke up listening to what I thought were outrageous news skits on the radio to only turn on the television to see it all happen live with constant playback of the shocking events. Watching the towers collapse is still clear in my mind and the shock across the world it brought. With our war in Afghanistan and Iraq still raging on, it is sad to know that the death toll of US Soldiers in Iraq since the conflict has now surpassed those killed from both towers that day what is now known as 9/11.

Weekly Update:
Not much to mention this week, it was a cooler week temperature wise and just overall nice. No major traffic issues, went to a nice concert on Friday night to celebrate the Korean Harvest Festival (no idea what that is but it was fun). I guess this past week was ... normal? Hard to think what the weeks were before with all the drama at my old job as that becomes more and more distant. I do hear that nothing has changed and things have even gotten worse or much more chaotic as the stuff I use to do are quickly falling through the cracks. I always told them if they need help or anything to just call ... but nothing. The offer will always be there, but is their pride to big to ask? I have always believed in making life and work easier not just for me but for everyone. However, there are those who don't understand that concept. Well, what can you do ... what can you do.

At the movies:
A pretty good showing for the post-summer films this week as the off-comedy of Burn After Reading takes top honors with 19.4 million. New at #2 is Tyler Perry's The Family that Preys with 18 mil and really, does his name have to be in every title he does? Showing up at #3 is the drama Righteous Kill with 16.5 mil and I would say pretty low number considering the caliber of talent in this film. The number is a little higher than I projected though. Coming in at #4 is The Women with 10 mil and unfortunately that is the final release for our friends at Picturehouse Films as they close their doors. Rounding off the top 5 this week is "The House Bunny" with another 4.3 mil.

Other News:
Nearly 2,000 victims are rescued from Hurricane Ike's path of destruction in Texas. The death toll rose to 25 in nine states as rescuers work around the clock to save folks from the devastation and flooding on Sunday. Ike also leaves millions of people without power across Texas and parts of Louisiana. The 2,000 plus people that needed to be saved apparently were folks who ignored evacuation orders and of course paid the price dearly for it. Now as Ike moves further North, it is becoming nothing more than a heavy rain but the damage is done and this isn't the end of hurricane-season. Rescue teams continue to search and have vowed to keep working till they have knocked on every door in all the flooded areas. Receding flood waters help the effort but it is still a long process as they head into their 2nd day of rescue operations. Of course the flood is just one problem as the the force of Ike alone destroyed hundreds of homes in its path.

So what is new ... well it was just a matter of time that the blog/Google system would come up with some other issues. Loading photos ... or the ability not to be able to. Supposedly Mozilla FireFox is the web browser of choice for this blog system however currently when you try to load pictures up, it loads them put then you are stuck as you have to hit "done" to make it final/approved. If you just close the box then nothing happens and with the button missing, it sucks. Back to Explorer for pictures (which works GREAT by the way). What is next?

Weekly Update:
It was a nice short week last week as Labor Day was a non-work day and I took the Tuesday off as well but still worked from home. Traffic, as predicted, was terrible and probably will remain so till mid-October. But this year, my drive to work didn't suffer too much as in the past years. So that was great, instead of the extra 30 to 45 mins, I think I only took an extra 10 min hit to the commute. But all-in-all, it was a good week.

At the movies:

The summer is way over at the box office as the numbers this past weekend reflect that. New at the #1 spot this week is Bangkok Dangerous with only 7.8 million to lead off. Holding in at #2 is "Tropic Thunder" with another 7.5 mil and just shy of the 100 mil cume mark. Down to #3 is "House Bunny" with 5.9 mil more. In at #4 is "The Dark Knight" with 5.7 mil more and a cume of 512 mil! With that 512 (and still slowly growing), this puts "The Dark Knight" in the #2 spot for All Time Highest US Box Office right behind "Titanic" (600 mil) and past "Star Wars: A New Hope" (461 mil- adjusted from 1977). Rounding off the top 5 is "Traitor" with an additional 4.7 mil.

You may not know the name, but you sure do you know the voice. Movie-trailer voice-over king Don LaFontaine died on Monday due to complications from pneumothorax, a collapsed lung that causes air to build in the pleural cavity. His golden voice gave us suspense, thrills, chills, excitement and even laughter before the actual movies even came out on the big screen through the many movie previews. The film titles his voice has been attached to is in the thousands including such films as; "The Godfather," "The Simpsons," and "Terminator 2: Judgement Day" to name a few. He will leave a big empty void as the voices go silent, he was the master of this craft ...
LaFontaine was 68.

LABOR DAY LATE EDITION!

Another Labor Day which signifies the end of the summer once again ... overall this summer was pretty good, had some HOT days but also some very cool nights. Unlike last year which there were weeks of crazy heat, this year was much better. However living in Southern California, summer never really ends temperature wise.

Weekly Update:
Sunday I attended the Nascar Pepsi 500 at the Fontana Auto Club Speedway (formally the California Speedway). I did the usual suite courtesy of DLP/Texas Instruments and it was a good time. This year was a LOT cooler than the same race last year where it was at least 110 degrees, yesterday it stayed in the low 90's with some good breezes. California native Jimmie Johnson won this race and I believe it is his 7th win at that track. He has a great track record there but overall he is one of the top leaders in the Sprint Cup. We actually stayed till the end of the race to watch him win and see the fireworks go off before heading back to the Mission Inn & Spa. Stayed the night there and it is a fantastic place where many US Presidents have stayed while in the area. I believe the Regan's spent their honeymoon there as well back in the day.

At the race itself we had a nice meet and greet with the current DLP #96 driver Ken Schrader who is an ol-timer driver but a very nice guy with a lot of experience. He didn't fair to well on this particular race but honestly he is just a substitute driver to help them finish the year.

At the movies:
Comedy still holding ground for a 3rd week in a row as "Tropic Thunder" gets the holiday weekend #1 spot with an extra 11.5 million for the 4-day. New at #2 is the sci-fi action film Babylon A.D. with 9.6 mil. Still strong at #3 is "The Dark Knight" with an extra 8.6 mil to add to its coffers. In at #4 is "The House Bunny" with an additional 8.3 mil and not a bad drop from last week. Rounding off the top 5 is Traitor with only 7.9 mil.

New movies that did not make the top 5:
Just one this week as the comedy-spoof Disaster Movie with 6.2 mil and enough to earn the #7 spot for this week ... aren't we done with these kinds of films now???

Other News:
during the The Democratic National Convention (DNC) took place last week and overall it was pretty good. Although I did not get to see all of it, I did catch a few speeches by the Clintons and it sort of served a reminder how prosperous things were growing and going during Bill Clinton terms in office ... still amazes me how we go to a potential surplus in the national debt to currently being one of the worst of all time! I do feel Hillary Clinton would have been a better candidate and future President not to mention the historical significance it brings ... but I do think Obama is a solid second pick and after last week, I would say he is the next President of the United States. Honestly though I do believe that the non-brainwashed people of this country are tired and fed-up with the current administration and putting McCain in office would guarantee a continuation of that situation. Do we like kicking ourselves in the head to continue to kick ourselves for another four years? I certainly hope not but we could always have another situation where the popular vote of the people lost to the electoral college vote. So go out and vote America, your vote doesn't matter (unless you are a super-delegate) but at least you can feel good about yourself. Did you know there was a potential assassination attempt of Obama during the DNC ... apparently some folks were prepared to shoot him and when they gave their statements they said because he was black and his name was too close to Osama ... go go southern renegade Republicans!
